Advances in Patient Safety: Indicators and Impact on Cost Assistance Fernando Paragó
The presentation initially makes the consideration that, although the theme "Patient Safety" is very much in vogue today, it is present in the practice of care in health since ancient times. The Latin-maxim primum non nocere, known as the principle of non-maleficence, attributed to Hippocrates, illustrates this fact. Then goes on to highlight a number of initiatives that can be identified as associated with concern for patient safety, since then, culminating in the framework of the modern process of study and development of safety in health care, published by the Institute of Medicine, the report To Err is Human, 1999. The advances of the last decade are addressed and their main steps are listed.

Indicators associated with Patient Safety, from national and international data are discussed, from literature review and reporting of key market institutions. Surveys on impact on costs of care are listed. The numbers of National Efforts To Make Safer Care, from the US Agency for Research and Quality in Health Care (AHRQ), from 2010 to 2014 are presented and is made a projection of values based on DATASUS.
